It is one of the most polluted places in the world, but hope remains.
The Niger Delta in Nigeria is a perfect illustration of the ‘oil curse’: decades of oil exploitation and repeated oil spills, coupled with clandestine oil trafficking, have devastated the region’s mangroves, a source of life essential to ocean biodiversity, climate stability, and the survival of local communities.
However, individuals are taking action to fight against this environmental and health disaster.
Local scientists, environmental activists, and lawyers from London have joined forces to seek solutions while planting the seeds of hope. This film by Judith Rueff and Moïse Gomis, France 24’s correspondent in Nigeria, accompanies them in their daily fight.
‘Nigeria: seeds of hope’, a Reporters+ in co-production with Arte G.E.I.E and Factstory, will be broadcast on France 24’s four channels (in English, French, Spanish, and Arabic), YouTube, france24.com, and social media platforms.
