‘Returning to Khartoum’
Saturday, April 5 at 10:10 PM*
A film by Bastien Renouil and Mohamed Farhat
Format: 32 minutes
Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a devastating civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a powerful paramilitary group. The conflict has plunged the country into a spiral of violence and destruction, with civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict.
Fighting has ravaged cities, including the capital Khartoum and its surrounding areas. The population of Sudan, already traumatised by decades of war, is now facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Millions have been internally displaced, while others have fled to neighbouring countries. Critical infrastructure, such as hospitals and schools, has been targeted.
Two years on, the situation is grim: the regular army has managed to push back the paramilitary militia on different fronts but remains unable to help the displaced people who are taking refuge in schools. The Sudanese are encouraged to return home, while the threat remains palpable, and they must fend for themselves.
France 24 reporters Bastien Renouil and Mohamed Farhat went to meet these civilians striving to rebuild their lives amidst the raging conflict.
‘Returning to Khartoum’, a Reporters+ broadcast on the four France 24 channels (in English, French, Arabic, and Spanish), on YouTube, on the france24.com website, and on social networks.
